President of Ashton Petroleum Consultants Ltd. (a private company providing consulting services to the energy sector) since 1985. Mr. Ashton served on the Board of Directors of Cobalt Energy Ltd., (a public oil and gas company) from June 2007 to July 2009. 

Mr. Ashton was Chairman of the Board and co-founder of AJM Petroleum Consultants (“AJM”) since co-founding it in 1999 until March 2009. AJM specializes in the evaluation of corporate reserves, acquisitions and divestitures and unconventional reserves, such as coalbed methane and tight gas. Mr. Ashton joined British American Oil (subsequently Gulf Canada, a public oil and gas company) in 1965, holding various positions lastly as Manager of Reservoir Engineering until 1983. In 1986 Mr. Ashton co-founded AMH Group Ltd., which subsequently merged with Ashton Jenkins and Associates to form AJM. Mr. Ashton co-founded and was a director of Moreland Oil and Gas Ltd., (a public oil and natural gas company) from 1987 to 1990.

Mr. Ashton, P. Eng., graduated from the University of Alberta in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Mr. Ashton is a life member of APEGA and was a member of the Petroleum Society of CIM.


Nereus L. Joubert, LLB, LLD| show

Dr. Joubert has held several executive positions in the Sasol Group of companies in the past 19 years including his role as former Country President of Sasol Canada since March 2011. He has served as director on the boards of many of the subsidiaries of Sasol Limited (a NYSE and Johannesburg Securities Exchange listed company) including recently on Sasol Petroleum International (Pty) Limited, Sasol Synfuels (Pty) Limited and Sasol’s Canadian legal entities.  From June 2003 until March 2011, he was a Group Executive of Sasol Limited (a position similar to a Senior Vice President) for Legal and Assurance. He served as a member of the Group Executive Committee of Sasol Limited from 1996 to March 2011.

In 1994, Dr. Joubert was appointed Company Secretary of Sasol Limited and in 1995 he was appointed General Manager and Company Secretary. Prior thereto, from 1983 to 1994 he was a full time member of the Faculty of Law of the Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), initially as Lecturer, to finally become the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law.

Dr. Joubert obtained his Doctorate of Law in 1986, his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1981 and his B. Juris in 1979 at the University of Johannesburg. He also completed an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2000.

Peter Williams co-founded Annapolis Capital Limited in 2006. For the 12 years prior, Peter served in executive management positions in, and as a director of, numerous public and private oil and gas companies. Most recently, Peter was the CEO and Chairman of two successful private oil and gas companies, Krang Energy Inc. and Passage Energy Inc. Peter also had a term as a governor of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) between 2003 and 2005. Peter is currently a director of Highrock Energy Ltd., Corinthian Exploration Corp., Hawk Exploration Ltd., Caltex Resources Ltd. and Venturion Oil Limited, sitting as Chairman of Corinthian. Prior to entering the oil and gas industry, Peter practiced law at Bennett Jones LLP for 11 years. Peter earned a B.A. (economics) in 1974 and an LL.B. in 1981, both from Dalhousie University.

Mr. Ward, P. Geol, who has more than 31 years of experience in the oil and natural gas industry, graduated from the University of Calgary in 1978 with an Honors Degree in Geology.

Mr. Ward was Vice-President, Exploration of Innova Exploration from May 2004 to May 2006. Mr. Ward co-founded Chowade Energy Ltd. in 2003 which was merged into Innova Exploration in 2004. From 1999 to 2003 Mr. Ward was Manager, Geology & Geophysics with the NCE Resources Group and Petrofund Energy Trust, where he was a key member of the Petrofund Management team.

Mr. Ward was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Rockport Energy Corp. from 1998 to 1999 and from 1981 to 1997 he worked for Total Petroleum Canada, which became Rigel Oil & Gas where he was Exploration Manager for the last 7 years. Mr. Ward is a member of APEGA and AAPG.

Mr. Van de Pol is a Chartered Accountant with over 33 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Most recently, from 2009 to 2012, Mr. Van de Pol was the President and Chief Financial Officer of Rock Energy Inc., a publicly traded junior exploration and production company. Prior thereto, Mr. Van de Pol held the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Northrock Resources Ltd., a growth oriented intermediate exploration and production company from 1993 until 2008. From 1982 until 1993, Mr. Van de Pol progressed through various supervisory positions including the role of Controller at Sceptre Resources Ltd., an international exploration and production company. From 1979 until 1982, Mr. Van de Pol worked as a Staff Accountant and Audit Supervisor at Thorne Riddell Chartered Accountants, a predecessor to KPMG LLC.

Mr. Van de Pol completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Calgary in 1979 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta in 1981. He is currently a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Financial Executives International Canada.

Mr. Hall has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry including land negotiations, acquisitions, divestments and strategic planning initiatives. Mr. Hall has been working with Painted Pony since 2008, holding the role of Negotiations Specialist, where he has been a key member of the team in the development of corporate strategy, deal generation and partner relationships. Mr. Hall was appointed Vice President, Land in September 2012.

Previously, Mr. Hall was Vice President, Land at Redcliffe Exploration Ltd., Aquest Explorations Ltd. and Causeway Energy Corporation.

Mr. Hall holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary and a Professional Landman (P. Land) designation from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen.

Mr. Hanbury is a professional engineer with over 26 years of experience in the oil & natural gas industry. Most recently, Mr. Hanbury was Executive Vice President at Daylight Energy Ltd. from 2006 through to its acquisition by Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration and Production Corporation in 2011. During this time, from 2008 to 2010, Mr. Hanbury also served as a member of the board of directors at Bengal Energy Ltd. From 2005 until 2006, Mr. Hanbury served as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Sequoia Oil & Gas Trust, and as a director of White Fire Energy Ltd. following its spinout from Lightning Energy Ltd.

From 2003 until 2005 Mr. Hanbury was Vice President, Business Development at Argo Energy Ltd. primarily providing technical evaluations of strategic asset acquisitions. Prior to Argo, he held the position of Manager then Vice President, Technical Services at Advantage Energy Services Ltd. from 2000 until 2003. Mr. Hanbury served at Rigel Oil & Gas Ltd. from 1994  to 1999, in increasing capacities as a development engineer, becoming District Manager – Peace River Arch Business Unit, and prior thereto, from 1991 to 1994, as a Development Engineer at Rigel’s predecessor, Total Petroleum Canada Ltd. From 1985 to 1991, Mr. Hanbury was employed at Gulf Canada Resources in various Petroleum and Project Engineering capacities.

Mr. Hanbury holds a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in, Civil Engineering, from the University of Waterloo, where he participated in the Co-operative Education Program, and is a Professional Engineer registered with APEGA.

Dr. McNamara is a professional geologist with over 25 years of experience in the oil & natural gas industry. Most recently, Dr. McNamara was Vice President, Development at Spartan Oil Corp., from June 2011 to July 2012, and prior thereto, he was Vice President, Geology at Spartan Exploration Ltd., from 2009 until 2011.

Dr. McNamara held the position of Chief Geologist from June 2006, until August 2009 at Pegasus Oil & Gas Ltd. Prior to that Dr. McNamara held the position of Senior Exploration Geologist at Innova Exploration from 2004 until 2006, with a focus on northeast British Columbia and the Bakken play in Saskatchewan. He was a Senior Exploration Geologist at Vintage Petroleum Canada Inc. from 2001 until 2004. Prior thereto, he held Senior Geologist positions at Baytex Energy Corp. from 2000 until 2001, and at Santos Ltd. in Adelaide, Australia from 1997 until 2000. Dr. McNamara held various positions, of increasing responsibility, at Gulf Canada Resources from 1993 until 1997, and began his career at Chevron Canada Resources in 1984 until 1986 as an Exploration and Development Geologist.

Dr. McNamara holds a PhD. from the University of Calgary, which he attained in 1995 for his work on “An Evaluation of Geological Information for Defining Flow Units for Use in Quantitative Reservoir Modeling.” He also holds a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Calgary, which he attained in 1989, and an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Geology from St. Francis Xavier University.


James D. Reimer, M.Sc., P. Geol. | show

James D. Reimer, M.Sc., P. Geol, Vice President, Exploration

Mr. Reimer is a professional geologist with more than 30 years experience in the oil and gas business. He brings an extensive background in domestic and frontiers exploration management to Painted Pony. Most recently, he was Executive Vice President of Result Energy Inc. and co-founder of Online Energy Inc.

Prior thereto, he was President & CEO of Race Rocks Resources Ltd., Vice President, Exploration and Business Unit Vice President at Encal Energy Ltd., and Vice President, Exploration at Stampeder Exploration Ltd. Mr. Reimer began his career at Home Oil Company, following graduation with an Honours B.Sc. in geology and an M.Sc. in geology.

He is a Past-President of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and has been named a Science Alumnus of Honour by the University of Waterloo.


Stuart W. Jaggard, C.A. | show

Mr. Jaggard has over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, obtaining his Chartered Accountant designation in 1985. Over the last six years, he held the positions of Vice President, Finance and Vice President, Business Performance at Centrica Energy Canada, the Canada oil and gas operating division of Centrica, plc. Prior to this, Mr. Jaggard served as Chief Financial Officer of Flagship Energy Inc. He held various senior finance positions within the oil and gas industry prior to this. Mr. Jaggard worked in the audit practice of KPMG LLC for the period 1982-1995. 

Mr. Jaggard completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Calgary in 1982. He is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta.


Tonya L. Fleming | show

Ms. Fleming joined Painted Pony as Vice President and General Counsel in September 2014. Ms. Fleming was General Counsel at Birchcliff Energy Ltd. for the prior five years. Previously, she practiced law in the Calgary office of the national firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP where she specialized in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and corporate governance matters. Ms. Fleming holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Laws and a Masters of Business Administration from Dalhousie University. She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta. 


Douglas T. McCartney, BA LLB | show

Mr. McCartney is a partner with Burstall Winger LLP, where he has practiced since July 2005 with a focus on securities and corporate law. From November 2003 to July, 2005, he was an associate of Eeson & Woolstencroft LLP and prior thereto he was an associate at Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP and its predecessor firm Code Hunter Wittman. He advises both underwriters and issuers in respect of public and private securities financings, as well as mergers, corporate reorganizations and general corporate matters. Mr. McCartney obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Calgary in 1995 and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1998. He is the Corporate Secretary of Phoenix Oilfield Hauling Inc. and PanTerra Resource Corp., both of which are publicly traded companies listed on the TSX Venture Exchange and the Corporate Secretary of Canadian Sub-Surface Energy Services Corp., an oil and gas service company listed on the TSX.
